Middle School Comprehensive School Counseling Program

 

 Academic Services:

      

Academic Services provided at Chilton Middle School include orientation tours and presentations, course selection information and facilitation, individual student grade reviews, study strategies, parent consultation, 504 (student special needs) coordination, and middle school IDT (Instruction Decision Team) coordination.

                       

Fifth and Sixth Grade Developmental Guidance Curriculum:

 

Topics include instruction and reflection about anti-bullying strategies, career exploration, character education, communication skills, cultural awareness, protective behaviors, school safety, self-understanding, social skills, anger management, drug awareness (“THINK” curriculum presented with law enforcement), and learning styles.

 

Human Growth and Development Curriculum

 

Co-taught in conjunction with the fifth grade science curriculum, the issues of body image, gender and puberty awareness, basic biology, and basic hygiene are presented and discussed.

 

Personal/Social Development Services:

 

A wide variety of student issues are addressed either individually or in a small group situation at the middle school.  Topics include academic concerns, educational planning social skills, friendship/relationship issues, social skills, conflict management, educational planning, decision making, self-esteem, motivation, stress management, coping skills, anti-bullying strategies, anger management, family change, gender issues, creative problem solving, grief and loss, and substance abuse/good choices.

 

Academic and Career Services (ACP)

 

Academic and Career Planning is currently implemented in many of our content areas and curriculum.  Our vision at CMS is to continue our growth toward an integrated, whole-school program that addresses our students’ needs in a developmentally appropriate timeframe as they progress through middle school.  For specific ACP components listed by grade levels please see:   

 

Xello:

 

Xello is a state sponsored career development website.  Students at Chilton Public Schools work with this site on a regular basis starting in grade six and continue until graduation.  Student work is monitored and can be edited and changed as their interests and abilities develop.  Xello provides a framework and guide for students in their Academic and Career Planning.

 

Individual Learning Plan "Tiger Talk" Program:

 

The goal of our "Tiger Talks" is to bring the student, their parents, and school counselors together for information and discussion about students' post-secondary choices.  Co-facilitated by both the middle and high school counselors, "Tiger Talks" include career awareness, career clusters, career pathways, post-secondary information, communication skills, goal setting, study skills, self-management, and strengths identification.

 

Eighth Grade Post-Secondary Awareness Field Trip:

 

In the spring of their eighth grade year, all students have the opportunity to visit a private university, a state public university, and an area technical college.  Students have been provided with career development instruction, information, and discussion during Developmental Guidance and Technology classes and this field trip represents their culminating experience for middle school.

 

Consultation, Collaboration, and Support Services:

 

In addition to direct student services, the middle school counselor supports the mission of our school in many other ways.  Examples of other services provided are weekly grade level meetings, weekly consultation with administration, academic referrals, social/emotional referrals, parent meeting facilitator, teacher support facilitator, counselor mentor, district Tribes TLC trainer/facilitator, editor of CMS Newsletter, “Short List” documentation system maintaince, Peer Helper Advisor, Student Council Advisor, district “At Risk” Coordinator, M.S. National Honor Society tutoring coordinator, M.S. to E.S. Peer-to-Peer Coordinator,, Crisis/Emergency Response Team member, MS Standardized Testing Coordinator, Professional Development Committee member, Wellness Committee member and Activity Night Supervisor.
